Swaying the jury - the remarkable Baiba Skride
Juries at big international competitions are used to keeping their emotional distance, remaining impassive no matter how wonderful the performances in front of them. However, when remarkable Latvian violinist Baiba Skride played at the 2001 Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels, the jury members burst into spontaneous applause - not surprisingly she took first prize. She plays the sublime Beethoven Violin Concerto with the RTÉ NSO on 12 February under conductor Jakub Hruša, with Bruckner's 4th Symphony, the 'Romantic', also on the programme.

Argerich favourite in Paganini Variations
When Martha Argerich calls a pianist 'one of the most outstanding of his generation', people tend to take notice. The critics agree about South American pianist Sergio Tiempo - 'ahead of his time (Washington Post), 'an uncommon poetic sensibility allied to a powerhouse technique' (Chicago Tribune). He gets the perfect showcase for both the poetry and the virtuosity in Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, which he performs in his RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra début. Friday 19 February, NCH.
