Some 1,500 students marched on Cork City centre this lunchtime to protest against cutbacks in third-level education and the proposed rise in the student service charge.

This follows a similar demonstration in Dublin last month.

The peaceful protest was well-stewarded and gardaí were noticeably stationed along the route into the city centre.

Students from the Cork Institute of Technology left their campus shortly after 11.30am and joined fellow students from University College Cork on their walk towards the Grand Parade where a rally was due to begin at 2pm.

Prior to the march, UCC Students' Union Deputy President Daithi Linnane said any increase in fees would mean fewer students would be able to afford third-level education.
