Gardaí in Co Kildare are investigating the cause of a fire at a landfill near Naas, the operation of which is the subject of multiple High Court actions.
Last night's blaze at the Kerdiffstown facility - which is connected to one of Ireland's largest waste firms, A1 Waste - is the second outbreak in just two months.
The Environmental Protection Agency has said it has received more complaints about the Kerdiffstown landfill that any other, with many residents vomiting as a result of odours from the site.
Last month, a fire broke out which lasted 18 hours. Last night, a second fire burnt part of a building on the landfill.
Three companies are associated with the landfill. Neiphin Trading is in liquidation, Dean Waste Company Ltd is in receivership and Jenzsoph Ltd is insolvent.
The EPA has already secured an order preventing any new waste being taken onto the site, but will return to the High Court next week.
Mr Justice Edwards is expected to hear from the Attorney General before ruling on an EPA request for directors of companies to be held liable for any clean-up at Kerdiffstown, if the firms fail to do so.
Residents from nearby areas this afternoon claimed that lives will be lost if the EPA does not take immediate steps to make the site safe.
