A body believed to be that of Gerard Evans - one of the 'Disappeared' - has been discovered in Co Louth days after a 16-month search ended.
Mr Evans was one of a number of people who were killed and buried by republicans during the Troubles.
The Independent Commission for the Location of Victims' Remains had been searching for the body of Mr Evans, who was last seen hitch-hiking in 1979.
The dig at Carrickrobin in Co Louth had ended and the missing man's family recently spoke of their devastation at the failure to find their loved one.
It is believed that further information came to light in recent weeks, which convinced the commission to carry on searching.
The recovery is ongoing and the formal identification process will take some time.
It said the family of Mr Evans and gardaí have been informed.
State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy arrived at the site today.
Mr Evans family lived in Crossmaglen, a few doors from the home of Charlie Armstrong - another of the Disappeared - who vanished in 1981.
His remains were discovered in bogland in Co Monaghan last July.
In March 1999, the IRA named nine missing people it had abducted and killed, neither Mr Evans or Mr Armstrong were on the list.
