A murder investigation has been launched following the death of an 18-year-old man who was assaulted in Dundalk.

Niall Dorr died after he received head injuries during a row earlier this week.

Mr Dorr was with two friends walking down Castle Road in Dundalk just after 9pm on Wednesday when a row broke out with a group of up to seven others.

He was taken to hospital after he was assaulted in the altercation. He died last night in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

A post-mortem examination was carried out in Louth County Hospital in Dundalk today.

Gardaí then launched a murder investigation.

A 30-year-old man was arrested this afternoon in Dundalk.

Two men, aged 21 and 23, arrested last night remain in custody and are being questioned about the assault.

Gardaí have renewed their appeal for anyone with information to come forward and contact them. They are particularly anxious to speak to a motorist who reported the incident to a passing patrol car.
