The Health Service Executive is to close 28 beds in Our Lady's Hospital in Navan.

The decision has been criticised by staff unions who said they were shocked and disappointed at the move.

It is expected the bed closures will start on Monday.

One ward with 15 beds is closing along with a surgical ward that has 13 beds.

Unions and staff representative groups were called to a meeting at which management announced the closure.

The HSE told the meeting that since surgery has been stopped at the hospital they no longer needed surgical beds.

Industrial Relations Officer of the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation Tony Fitzpatrick described the move as nonsensical and said that it will make matters even worse for patients and staff in Our Lady of Lourdes hospital in Drogheda.

Donal Duffy of the Irish Hospital Consultants' Association said he was shocked and disappointed at the move saying the HSE was removing beds when an overstretched service was facing into its busiest time of the year.

The regional orthopaedic unit in the hospital is also to close - on a temporary basis - until next year due to budget constraints.

Meanwhile, there are also issues in the region's two largest hospitals.

In Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, the HSE has confirmed that four patients have the clostridium difficile infection.

It said all reasonable steps are being taken to protect patients.

In Cavan, the HSE has announced the cancellation of outpatient clinics and non-emergency operations until next Friday at the earliest.

The move comes after restrictions on hospital activity put in place since last Friday have not reduced the number of patients there.
