A 31-year-old man, who was found by gardaí to have an Uzi sub machine gun and silencer in a hotel room in Limerick, has been sentenced to ten years in jail.

Fintan Lynch, originally from Southill, Limerick, claimed the weapon was for his own protection.

The find at the Travelodge Hotel at Coonagh on 10 February came 11 days after Lynch had been released from prison.

Judge Carroll Moran imposed a seven-year sentence for the firearms offences at Limerick Circuit Court.

Judge Moran also activated a three-year suspended sentence imposed in 2007 for assault.
