Boy challenges police use of photo

Belfast - Court approves challenge

The High Court in Belfast has given a 14-year-old boy permission to challenge a decision by the PSNI to publish his photograph as part of an investigation into street violence in Derry.

The judge ruled that there was an arguable case that using his image in newspapers and leaflets breached his right to privacy under the European Convention on Human Rights.

The initiative involves the police publishing photographs of some of those suspected of involvement in interface crime and sectarian clashes in Derry and has also been used following the serious riots at the controversial 12 July Orange Order parade in Ardoyne this summer.

Lawyers for the boy are also to seek an undertaking from the PSNI that the practice will not be used again until a full court hearing is held.
