The body of Charlie Armstrong has been released to his family for burial almost three decades after he disappeared.

It follows confirmation that human remains discovered in Co Monaghan six weeks ago are those of the south Armagh man.

His family believe he was abducted and murdered by the IRA in 1981 when he disappeared on his way to mass.

The Independent Commission for the Location of Victims' Remains yesterday said DNA tests carried out on human remains found in north Monaghan in late July show they are those of Mr Armstrong.

He is considered one of the so-called disappeared - the 14 men and women abducted and killed by republican paramilitaries during the Troubles.

Mr Armstrong's funeral mass will take place on Saturday.
