The Central Applications Office (CAO) says it has given the gardaí logs and other evidence of the malicious attack on its online system earlier this week.

The third-level admissions body says it is also continuing to work with external consultants to investigate the attack.

CAO Operations Manager Joseph O'Grady confirmed in a statement that the malicious 'denial of service' attack, which prevented thousands of applicants from accessing college offers online last Monday, has been ongoing since then.

The CAO server collapsed on Monday morning as a result of the attack, which caused further problems yesterday.

The CAO says a total of 37,000 applicants have now accepted round one offers, and it thanked students and parents for their patience.
