Confidential information sparked Mallow probe

Mallow General Hospital - No formal complaint about care
Mallow General Hospital - No formal complaint about care

The Health Information and Quality Authority has said it received confidential information about the treatment of a patient at Mallow General Hospital, which is to be the subject of an independent inquiry into the safety and quality of care.

The Authority has responded today to controversy over the reasons for its inquiry into the hospital and whether it had received any complaints about care.

HIQA said today that the confidential patient information it received was not a formal complaint, but it raised concerns about the range of treatment provided at Mallow General.

As a result of receiving the information, HIQA says it sought assurances from the HSE about patient care but did not secure adequate assurances that risks to patients were being adequately addressed.

As a result, the inquiry was set up.
