A 24-year-old man has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of a woman in Connemara in Galway two years ago.
Jakub Fidler, originally from the Czech Republic, pleaded guilty to the murder of 19-year-old Nicola Vonkova, also from the Czech Republic, at Cartur Leathan, Indreabhán, between 20 and 21 July 2008.
The court was told Ms Vonkova died from strangulation.
Supt Noel Kelly from Salthill Garda Station gave evidence that Ms Vonkova, who was a friend of Mr Fidler, died after a row about spying on Mr Fidler's instant messaging on a computer.
Ms Vonkova's family travelled from the Czech Republic for the sentencing.
In a letter read to the court, her mother said she was a mother who survived her child and that was a situation no parent was prepared for.
She said she was unable to accept the death of her daughter and the way she went away.
Mr Justice Paul Carney imposed the mandatory life sentence.
