A Cavan man has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of a 33-year-old father of one.
Trevor McCabe, 35, of Mountpleasant, Ballyconnell, Co Cavan, was found guilty by a jury last week of the murder of Darren McGrath in Belturbet, Co Cavan on 20 May 2008.
McCabe shot Mr McGrath twice in the head as he lay in bed asleep.
In a victim impact statement his partner, who was beside him when he was shot, said the murder had left her terrified and constantly looking over her shoulder.
Nicole Lennon’s statement, which was read to the court by a garda, said Trevor McCabe had taken her daughter’s father away and no words could describe the pain she was going through.
The court heard that McCabe had a number of previous convictions including drug offences, road traffic and theft.
He also had a conviction in England for wounding with intent and carrying an imitation firearm.
During the ten-day trial, the court heard Ms Lennon, 21, had woken to find a gunman in her bedroom and witnessed him shoot Mr McGrath twice in the head as he slept beside her.
