A 62-year-old man has appeared in court in Baltinglass, Co Wicklow, charged in connection with the fatal shooting of another man in Shillelagh on Thursday evening.

Cecil Tompkins, with an address at Cronelea, Shillelagh, was charged with assault causing serious harm to his 66-year-old brother Walter, at the same address.

He was remanded in custody to appear again at Baltinglass District Court on Tuesday.

Sergeant Des Murphy of Carnew Garda Station told the court that when he asked Cecil Tompkins if he had anything to say, Mr Tompkins replied, ‘no, no nothing.’

On the consent of both sides, Judge Gerard Furlong agreed to remand Mr Tompkins in custody until Tuesday.

Mr Tompkins’ solicitor she was strongly recommending that because her client had a medical condition he should receive ongoing medication, medical assistance and attention while in custody.

The judge said he would make that specific request to the prison authorities.
