Two types of sesame seed mixes are being recalled by the Food Safety Authority due to the risk of salmonella.
The packets of seed mixes are supplied by Independent Irish Health Foods Ltd and the risk was identified as part of a survey on ready-to-eat nuts and dried seeds.
The mixes under recall are Organic Sesame Seeds (250g and 500g) and Organic Four Seed mixes (250g and 500g) with a best before date of 3 March 2011 to 7 May 2011 inclusive, and with Bolivia as the country of origin.
Some of the packets, which are widely distributed, clearly show the name ‘Independent Irish Health Foods Ltd’, while other packs have been supplied to independent retailers such as health stores. These are labelled ‘packed by Independent Irish Health Foods’.
FSAI Chief Executive Alan Reilly said it was a concern that this is the second time a salmonella issue has been identified in relation to sesame seeds in less than a year.
He said consumers who have affected products should either dispose of them or return them to the store where they were purchased.
Anyone who has already consumed the products in question and is feeling unwell should seek medical advice.
