Trim Circuit Criminal Court - Man received suspended sentence

A 25-year-old old man has been convicted on drugs charges following an investigation by gardaí probing the death of model Katy French.

Trim Circuit Criminal Court was told today Russell Memery had pleaded guilty to a charge of conspiring to possess cocaine in Co Meath in December 2007.

He had been arrested by gardaí investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Ms French.

She was brought to Our Lady's Hospital in Navan on 3 December 2007 but died five days later.

A post mortem examination revealed she had suffered brain damage and had taken cocaine.

Memery, originally from Finglas in Dublin but now with an address in Yellow Clay Manor in Navan, Co Meath, pleaded guilty to a charge of conspiring with others to possess cocaine for supply on the night of 2 December 2007 or the early hours of 3 December in Clonee, Co Meath.

Det. Garda Niall O'Donnell told the court that Memery was contacted by a person and asked to get €200 worth of cocaine.

He did and handed it over at a petrol station in Clonee but did not benefit financially from the transaction.

He had around 20 previous convictions for road traffic offences and had co-operated with the investigation, according to the gardaí.

Defence Counsel said that because of the close media attention to this case, her client had lost friends and moved house.

Judge Michael O'Shea said while Memery was a minor player, it did not mean his involvement was not serious.

The Judge subsequently imposed a two-and-a-half year suspended prison sentence.
