Cork - Man rescued after vessel sank

A lone fisherman was rescued off the coast of East Cork by the Ballycotten RNLI Lifeboat at around 2am this morning.

The family of the fisherman were unable to contact him by phone and became concerned when his 14m fishing vessel failed to return to harbour.

It had been due in at around 11.30pm.

Ballycotten Lifeboat services were contacted at around 1am and crews were activated - the Waterford based Coastguard helicopter was also involved in the rescue.

The man was located about 2.5km from his last known position – 10km south east of the Ballycotten lighthouse.

A red flare was spotted and the fisherman was found safe and well in a life raft.

His vessel had gone down and it is thought he had been in the life raft for around four hours.
