Coleraine - Man released on bail

A man has appeared in court in Co Derry charged with the attempted murder of 46-year-old Damian Fleming in Coleraine last May.

Mr Fleming was critically injured in an assault near his home in The Heights area of the town.

His 49-year-old friend, Kevin McDaid, was murdered in the same incident.

Mr McDaid, a Catholic father-of-four, was beaten to death by a loyalist gang outside his home.

11 people have since been charged with his murder.

It is understood that the row began over the flying of flags in The Heights estate.

Coleraine magistrates' court today heard there was no evidence directly linking 41-year-old Rodney Gardiner to the assault on Mr Fleming.

Mr Gardiner’s solicitor told the court: ‘There is no evidence at present available to the courts which indicates he was directly involved in any assault on any individual on any date.’

However, a police officer told the court that he believed he could connect the accused with the charges against him.

Mr Gardiner spoke only to confirm that he understood the charges.

He was released on bail of £500 and must report twice a week to police.
