The first of a series of teachers' conferences is under way with the public service pay deal likely to dominate the agenda.

Primary school teachers' union the Irish National Teachers' Organisations is to debate an emergency motion at its annual conference tomorrow, calling on members to reject the proposed public sector pay and reform deal in a forth coming ballot.

The motion will be debated at 11am tomorrow morning.

The INTO executive has already recommended that members accept the deal.

Newly-appointed Minister for Education Mary Coughlan due to attend tomorrow morning.

Elsewhere, the secondary school teachers' union, the Teachers' Union of Ireland, is recommending rejection of the deal.

Yesterday, General Secretary Peter McMenamin said its members were ready for an escalation of industrial action, if that happened.

General Secretary of the ASTI John White, which also represents secondary teachers, said some of its members are indicating they will not support the deal.
