10 rescued on Sally Gap

Mountain rescue teams have had to come to the aid of 10 people who became stranded in their cars in snow and ice at the Sally Gap in Co Wicklow.

The two groups of people rescued on Saturday and Sunday nights included four children under the age of 14.

This brings call-outs for stranded motorists to a total of 17, some involving multiple vehicles, since the cold weather began on 20 December.

Volunteers from the Glen of Imaal and Dublin Wicklow Mountain rescue teams assisted the stranded motorists.

Regardless of recent rain and significant thaw, the approach roads to the Sally Gap by Luggala, Glenmacnass and the Lough Bray remain encased in ice and snow, providing extremely challenging driving conditions.

Rescuers are frustrated by the attitude of motorists who ignore advice from gardaí and AA Roadwatch to avoid the area, and don't turn around when safe to do so.
