A new system to manage over 1,000 patients with epilepsy who attend Dublin's Beaumont Hospital has been launched.
The electronic patient record replaces paper records and allows clinicians instant access to web-based records anywhere in the hospital.
Specialists say it will speed up care, reduce unnecessary tests and prescription mistakes.
Dr Norman Delanty, head of Beaumont Hospital's epilepsy team, said the system would improve the quality and safety of care.
Doctors hope the system can in time be extended to manage the care of epilepsy patients nationally.
The project follows five years of research funded by the Health Research Board and developed by the hospital's epilepsy team and information technology department and supported by Trinity College Dublin.
Around 37,000 people have epilepsy in Ireland.
