The management body representing most of Ireland’s primary schools has said it expects the majority of schools to open as normal on Thursday despite the weather conditions.
The Catholic Primary School Management Association has said schools will only close if it is impossible for them to do otherwise.
It has issued guidance to principals on its website urging them to check that systems including heating are working and that there is safe access to and from premises.
The Department of Education has said it is a matter for individual boards of management to decide whether local weather and road conditions warrant the closure of a school.
Where a school is forced by bad weather or other reasons to close it must make up those days during the remainder of the year.
Bus Éireann will make decisions about school bus transport services locally, based on its knowledge and assessment of prevailing conditions.
