The HSE has said that the Accident and Emergency department at the Midland Regional Hospital in Mullingar is going back on call this evening.

It is not yet known if additional beds are to be made available for patients in the A&E area.

This follows an emergency meeting held this afternoon over the hospital being taken 'off-call'.

Consultants and senior clinicians at the hospital met the Health Service Executive as the hospital was off-call due to chronic overcrowding in the Accident & Emergency Department.

Last night the HSE strongly denied claims that more than 40 beds had been left unused at the hospital in recent cutbacks.

At lunchtime yesterday the A&E unit had stopped accepting patients from the ambulance service due to overcrowding.

The hospital is open but a senior clinician has described conditions there this week as 'dangerous'.

The Mullingar hospital provides A&E cover for over 100,000 people living in Longford, Westmeath and surrounding counties.

The issue will be addressed again in a meeting next tuesday.
