His injuries are said to be not life-threatening.
The PSNI says two armed and masked men tried to force their way into the man's house between Aghalee and Aghagallon just before 10pm.
During a struggle they shot the man in the leg with a handgun and hit him on the arm with a sledge hammer.
They then escaped in a red Audi car, which is believed to have been stolen earlier in the evening in Dromore, Co Down.
A girl in her late teens and a younger girl who were in the house at the time were not injured.
