Two held over €1.5m drugs seizure

Two men have been arrested following the seizure of drugs with an estimated street value of almost €1.5m.

Gardaí recovered 20kgs of cocaine and 5kgs of cannabis during the search of a house in Moate, Co Westmeath last night.

The two men are being questioned in Athlone and have been targets of the Westmeath and Garda National Drugs Unit for some time.

Operation Sonic was set up to target a drugs distribution network operating from Athlone and Galway.

It was the second substantial seizure of drugs in 24 hours after six ounces of cocaine and 16,000 ecstasy tablets were found during a raid in North Frederick Street in Dublin.

A 23-year-old man is being questioned in Store Street in relation to this seizure.

All three men in custody are being held under drug trafficking legislation and can be questioned for up to a week.
