Two men have appeared in court on charges relating to a shooting incident in Co Fermanagh last weekend involving the PSNI and suspected dissident republicans.

26-year-old Gerard McManus, with an address at Fern Hill in Letterkenny, Co Donegal, was charged with attempted murder and with using a firearm to resist arrest.

Also in the dock was 32-year-old Kevin Barry Nolan from Blacklion in Co Cavan.

He was charged with attempted murder and possessing a weapon.

In 2005, Mr Nolan stood unsuccessfully as an independent republican candidate in the Westminster general election.

A solicitor for Gerard McManus asked the PSNI detective in charge of the case if he could confirm that undercover British soldiers had been involved in Saturday night's incident in the border town of Garrison.

The detective sergeant said he could not answer that question.

The two accused were remanded in custody for a month and will appear again by video link from Maghaberry Prison.
