Full details and expanded map

Public consultations are to be held on the route of Dublin's proposed new underground DART line, pending an application for a railway order next year.

The line would link all rail networks in Dublin.

If the new line is built by 2016 it would link up the entire Dublin rail network, including LUAS, Metro, DART, commuter and inter city services.

Iarnród Éireann had originally planned to make the terminus in Heuston Station but this has been abandoned as it would disrupt existing services.

Iarnród Éireann is now proposing that the terminus be placed in Inchicore.

Residents there are concerned about the impact of the construction and have requested further information.

However, the rail company says the Interconnector line is vital to the success of Transport 21.

The number of rail passengers in Dublin could rise to 100m a year if the plan goes ahead.

Up to 7,000 jobs may be created if the new underground is built.
