An initial report into a plane crash in which two Air Corps members were killed last month has so far found no technical defects on the plane involved.

Captain Derek Furniss, 32, from Rathfarnham in Dublin, and Cadet David Jevens, 22, from Glynn in Co Wexford, died when their Pilatus PC-9M tandem seated aircraft crashed near Cornamona in Co Galway.

The crew was on a training flight from Baldonnell in Dublin to Galway Airport via Carrigallen near the Leitrim/Cavan border and Maum in Co Galway.

The flight left the Baldonnell Aerodrome at 5.20pm on 12 October and last made contact with Air Traffic Control at Shannon at 5.39pm when the plane was 1,500ft over Carrigallen.

Investigators say the aircraft was destroyed on impact and debris was spread over a 300 foot area at Maum Dearg in Connemara.

Data from the cockpit recorder and flight data recorder has been successfully downloaded and is being examined by the investigation team.

A final report is to be published by the AAIU in the coming months.
