In the Glen, Passage West in Co Cork, residents surveyed damage to their property and cars that were devastated in a flash flood that lasted just 30 minutes.

The fire service assisted several residents to flee their flooded homes. Some got out in time to move their cars but others were not as fortunate and their vehicles were washed away in a torrent of water, muck and other flood debris.

Local residents said they have been warning of the risk of flooding for years.

Met Éireann says the flooding was caused when 17mm of rain fell in just three hours yesterday afternoon.

It is also warning that further heavy rain may lead to more flooding in east Munster and south Leinster tomorrow night.
