An attempted raid on the post office in Inverin in Connemara has been foiled.

Two men were arrested in the area following an operation by gardaí in Galway and Salthill backed up by the National Surveillance Unit.

A handgun, kitchen knives, balaclavas, gloves and cable-ties were also recovered.

The two men, who are in their 30s, are being detained at Mill Street Garda Station in Galway.

They can be questioned for up to three days.
