16 people, including a child, were rescued from a fire in an apartment block on Shandon Street in Cork city earlier this morning.
The alarm was raised at around 4.30am when the fire broke out in the ground floor hallway of the building, which has apartments on three floors and in an attic.
The fire trapped many of the occupants of the building in their apartments and firefighters had to use breathing apparatus and ladders to rescue them.
Nobody was seriously injured and the fire was brought under control quickly.
Alternative accommodation is now being organised for the 16 people. Three units of Cork City Fire Service attended the scene.
Separately, an investigation is under way after a fire broke out at the Baldoyle Industrial Estate in Dublin.
The alarm was raised at around 12.45am.
Gardaí say it is not known whether anyone was injured or which building was affected.
