Fatal road crash in Co Derry

A 24-year-old man has died in a road accident in Co Derry.

The pedestrian was struck by a car on the Racecourse Road in the Shantallow area of the city shortly after 2am this morning.

He has been named as Martin Gallagher from Sandale park in the Steelstown area of Derry.

Mr Gallagher was a well-known member of the Foyle Valley Athletic Club who had taken part in a number of marathons.

The PSNI says a 22-year-old man has been arrested and is helping them with their inquiries.

The Racecourse Road was closed for a time while investigations took place but has now been re-opened.
