The country's Catholic bishops have said approaching a mental health professional is a sign of strength rather than an indication of weakness.
In a Pastoral Letter marking today’s 'Day for Life', they urged a reduction in the stigma so often associated with mental illness, depression and suicide.
They also expressed the hope that their particular focus on suicide will help raise awareness of the vital role played by families and a supportive parish community in sustaining those who may be struggling to cope.
The bishops voiced support for those who have lost a friend or a family member through suicide.
By helping them to understand what may draw someone to take their own life, the Bishops say they wish to show them something of the love and compassion of Christ.
