Astronomers in Ireland and across Europe have been celebrating the release of the first scientific data from the Herschel telescope.

Irish engineers and scientists are playing key roles in the billion euro space project.

The Chief Scientist for one of the three instruments onboard is Professor Matt Griffin from Dublin, who is based at the University of Cardiff.

Irishman Leo Metcalfe is in charge of space operations for the telescope.

Early results from the mission are said to be stunning.
