RTÉ News has learned that a national school in Cavan is being investigated by the HSE for an outbreak of human swine flu.

The HSE has confirmed that it is investigating an outbreak of Influenza A (H1N1) at a national school in its north east region.

RTÉ News has learned it is Laragh National School in Cavan, a mixed school with 108 pupils.

It is understood that influenza-like illnesses have been reported in around 18 pupils and to date laboratory tests in a number of cases have been confirmed as being the H1N1 virus.

Concerns about the virus came to light when a number of children presented in recent days with fever, cough and other symptoms.

The school remains open.

Dr Peter Finnegan, specialist in public health medicine said the HSE was working closely with the schools and that parents were being advised that children who are sick should be kept home for seven days form the onset of symptoms.

The school has written to parents informing them of the situation and says any child who is sick will be sent home.
