A man has died near Kinsale, Co Cork, after he was hit by a car, which failed to stop in the early hours of this morning.

The 21-year-old pedestrian was hit at Pewterhole Cross shortly after 3am.

The car did not stop at the scene, but it was found in a follow-up operation by gardaí and an 18-year-old man was arrested.

The man was held at Togher Garda Station, but has been released without charge and a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The body of the deceased man was taken to Cork University Hospital.
