A man’s body has been recovered from the sea at the Cliffs of Moher, Co Clare.

The body, which is believed to have been in the water for up to three weeks, was observed in the sea close O'Brien's Tower shortly after 6pm by French tourists.

They notified staff at the nearby visitor centre who in turn contacted gardaí.

The Doolin unit of the Irish Coast Guard was sent to the scene where they recovered the partially clothed body at around 7.00pm.

The body has been removed to the Mid Western Regional Hospital in Limerick, where a post mortem examination is expected to take place tomorrow.

Gardaí say man's identity is unknown and have no reports of anyone missing in the area.

They say the man was probably in his 20s or 30s and may have been in the water for several weeks.

Gardaí at Ennistymon are investigating the discovery and say they will await the results of the post-mortem before deciding what direction their investigation will take.
