Two critical after fatal Limerick crash

Two people are in a critical condition after a crash in west Limerick in which a couple died.

The husband and wife who died have been named as 61-year-old Maurice Hartnett and his 59-year-old wife Margaret.

They were from Gurteen West, Ballingarry, Co Limerick.

The accident happened on the main Askeaton to Rathkeale Road shortly before 6pm yesterday evening.

The married couple were travelling in a van when their vehicle collided with a four-wheel drive SUV, about 3km outside of Askeaton.

The couple were pronounced dead a short time later, while two men in the SUV were taken to the Mid Western Regional Hospital.

This morning, they were both described as being in a critical but stable condition.

The stretch of road where the accident happened was closed last night but has now reopened.

Gardaí have appealed for anyone who may have witnessed the crash, or been travelling in the area at the time to contact them at Askeaton on 061 601 630.
