A man who robbed and killed pensioner Christy Hanley in Co Westmeath last year has been sentenced to 16 years in prison.

Noel Cawley of no fixed abode, but who previously lived in Castleblayney, Co Monaghan, beat Mr Hanley to death at his home on Bridge Street, Kilbeggan on the 21 May, 2008.

He also stole around €10,000 from the 83-year-old.

Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy said Cawley did not co-operate with gardaí during the investigation and did not admit his involvement.
