Central Criminal Court - Man denies 17 charges

A 32-year-old man has gone on trial at the Central Criminal Court accused of sexually assaulting his girlfriend while masquerading as a doctor.

The man has pleaded not guilty to 17 charges including sexual assault using a syringe, endangerment by masquerading as a doctor and purporting to treat her, depriving her of proper medical attention.

He is also charged with stealing a prescription pad from a dentist and writing false prescriptions and stealing money from the woman through fraudulent use of her laser card.

The court heard that the man began a brief but intense relationship with the woman in 2006 and used an alias and said he was a doctor working in a hospital in Dublin.

The woman had a medical complaint and the man took over the management of her treatment, carrying out two invasive vaginal procedures and administering an injection to her lower back.

It is the prosecution's case that the woman gave her consent to these procedures because she believed he was a doctor.

When they split up after about four months she discovered she had a life-threatening tumour which had to be removed.

The trial continues.
