A transatlantic jet was forced to declare an emergency this afternoon and divert to Shannon Airport after cabin crew reported smoke in the passenger cabin.
Northwest Airlines flight 821, an Airbus A330, was carrying 285 passengers and crew and was en route from Fiumicino Airport in Italy to Atlanta in the US.
At around 1pm, the pilot contacted air traffic controllers at Shannon and informed them of the emergency.
The pilot requested permission to divert to Shannon where the plane touched down safely at around 1.30pm.
Units of the fire service from Shannon Town and Ennis, along with ambulances from Clare and Limerick, were scrambled to the airport.
The plane was inspected by engineers and given the all-clear to depart for Atlanta.
No one was injured in the incident.
