A 31-year-old man has been charged with the murder of a baby in Gorey four years ago.
Ross Murphy died in Our Lady’s Children's Hospital on 5 April 2005 after he had been transferred there from Wexford hospital.
A post mortem examination subsequently identified the baby had sustained ‘certain injuries’ of concern.
Philip Doyle, from Aughrim in Co Wicklow, was extradited from Amsterdam and was escorted by gardaí back to Dublin yesterday afternoon.
He appeared before the Dublin District Court yesterday and was remanded in custody until 9 June.
Ross Murphy was just four and a half months old when he was admitted to Wexford General Hospital on 31 March 2005.
His mother became worried because her only child had been vomiting and crying a lot.
The baby was kept under close observation and released three days later.
However his condition deteriorated and he was re-admitted to Wexford before being transferred to Our Lady's Children's Hospital in Dublin where he died two days later.
The post mortem examination carried out by the State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy identified certain injuries of concern and gardaí began a criminal investigation.
A file was sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions who subsequently directed that the mother's partner at the time, Philip Doyle, be charged with Ross Murphy's murder.
However Mr Doyle had by then moved to Amsterdam.
He was arrested on a European arrest warrant and extradition proceedings began which he did not contest.
Gardaí from Wexford escorted him back to Ireland yesterday and he was brought before the Dublin District Court yesterday afternoon.
Garda Ian Hayes from Gorey Garda Station told the court that Philip Doyle made no reply when he was charged with the murder of Ross Murphy at 3 Creagh Demense in Gorey, the house where he lived with Ross and his mother on 5 April 2005.
Judge Patrick McMahon remanded him in custody and he is due to appear again before Clover Hill district court on 9 June.
