A Dublin Paralympics champion who had part of his leg amputated after an accident in which he fell from a school bus 12 years ago has been awarded €950,000 in damages.

Paul Byrne from Killinarden, Tallaght, was five at the time of the accident.

He later went on to win gold medals for swimming in the Paralympics.

The 17-year-old, who is doing his Leaving Cert, took the High Court action, through his mother, against Paul Mortons Coach Hire.

The court heard the accident occurred in October 1997 when the front wheel of the bus rolled over his left leg.

Mr Justice John Quirke approved a settlement of just under €1m and paid tribute to Paul's extraordinary swimming achievements.
