The International Transport Federation has called for an investigation of whether a ship, abandoned in Kinsale Harbour by its Greek owners, has been used for international human trafficking.

Four Pakistani crew members left aboard have been fed by local people for six weeks. This evening the union said it would get the men home.

The Lucky Star has been at anchor for six weeks on the approaches to Kinsale Harbour, where it was detained by the Department of Transport after it arrived from Iceland, because it was regarded as unsafe to go back to sea.

Its Greek owners and the captain abandoned the four Pakistani crew members who have since been fed by local people led by the Mission to Seafarers.

The ITF seafarers' union has called for a full investigation of the situation, expressing the view that the vessel could have been used for human trafficking.
