A mother and her young son have escaped unhurt from a malicious house fire in south Belfast.

The blaze, in a house at Walmer Street off the Donegal Road, was started after flammable liquid was poured through the letterbox.

Police said the woman in her 30s and her 11-year-old son managed to get out of the house and were unharmed but shaken.

Detectives are investigating a motive for the attack.
