An 18-year old woman has been charged with the murder of her brother at a house party in Co Kilkenny.

Caroline Brennan of Love Lane, Castlecomer, Co Kilkenny, appeared before Castlecomer District Court today.

Michael Brennan, 22, died at a party in his uncle's house at Barrack Street, Castlecomer, shortly after 3.30am on 30 December last year.

He was discovered with a knife wound to his upper body and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency services.

Supt Walter O'Sullivan told Judge William Harnett that the DPP had directed that a charge of murder be brought against the accused in this case.

Sgt Teresa Philips told the court she arrested Ms Brennan outside Castlecomer Court.

Sgt Philips said the accused replied, ‘No, I've nothing to say’ when the charge was read to her.

Supt O'Sullivan made an application to the court for Ms Brennan to be remanded in custody to Cloverhill until later this week.

Michael Lanigan, solicitor for Ms Brennan, said it was not his intention to seek bail for his client at this stage and that he would be lodging a bail application to the High Court.

Judge William Harnett remanded Ms Brennan in custody to appear at Cloverhill District Court on Thursday.
