Over 11m pieces of waste were recovered from the world's oceans and coastlines last year.

A report by the Ocean Conservancy Organisation reveals that a voluntary clean-up yielded nearly 700,000 plastic bags and huge amounts of cigarette waste.

Over 400,000 volunteers in 104 countries took part in the clean-up on just one day last year.

The worst for waste was the US, where nearly 4m of the total 11m items was recovered.

Nearly 9,000 items of waste were picked off Irish beaches.

The world total also included 35,000 cigarette butts, lighters and packets and 11,000 babies nappies.
