A murder investigation has been launched following the death yesterday of a publican in Co Offaly.

Gardaí say Matt Farrell died after he received an injury to his head.

A post mortem examination was carried out on his body by the Deputy State Pathologist yesterday.

Mr Farrell received blunt force trauma to the head according to the findings of Dr Michael Curtis.

The National Bureau of Criminal Investigation is assisting local gardaí.

Up to 100 officers are now working on the case.

Mr Farrell's body was found on the floor of his home in Daingean yesterday, his hands tied behind his back.

A small sum of money was taken according to gardaí.
