Six people questioned over the murders of two British soldiers and a PSNI officer this month have won a High Court challenge against their continued detention.

Five of the six have now been released from custody.

However, a sixth man, prominent republican Colin Duffy, was re-arrested by police investigating the murders of the two British soldiers on 7 March.

Earlier, Northern Ireland's Lord Chief Justice overturned the extended detention of the six suspects.

Sir Brian Kerr ruled that the the judge who granted the order extending the detention of the six, Judge Corinne Philpott, had not considered the legality of the suspects' original arrest when making her decision.

The Lord Chief Justice did not question the lawfulness or otherwise of the arrests but he said the judge should have examined the issue before granting the extension.

It is thought the ruling may have implications for UK anti-terrorism laws, which provide for 28-day detention.

The six were being held over the killings of soldiers Mark Quinsey and Patrick Azimkar and PSNI officer Stephen Carroll who were shot dead in separate attacks earlier this month by dissident republicans.

All were being held in connection with the murders of two British soldiers and a PSNI officer in separate incidents this month.
