Gardaí have begun a murder inquiry after a man was found shot dead at his home in Rathfarnham in Dublin.

Post mortem results showed the man had died from a number of gunshot wounds.

The victim has been named as 42-year-old Liam Murray.

His body was found in a bedroom of his house at Rockbrook Cottages, Rathfarnham around 10.30am yesterday morning when a friend called to the house.

The friend was alerted by family members who were concerned as they had not seen the man for some time.

No weapon was found at the scene and an extensive criminal investigation is under way.

Mr Murray was single, worked as a mechanic, and was originally from the Templeogue area.

A garda spokesperson said Mr Murray was seen socialising at a bar on the junction between the South Circular Road and Clanbrassil Street up to 6pm on St Patrick’s Day.

He was later seen in the Terenure area of south Dublin.

Gardai have issued an appeal to anyone who may have seen Mr Murray on or since St Patrick's Day or who may have been in the vicinity of Rockbrook Cottages in the days leading up to and after 17 March to contact the incident room in Terenure on 01 6666400, or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111.
